CLONAL
SELECTION
At the beginning of the Nineties, Tenute Silvio Nardi began the replantation of its vineyards and an extensive zoning. After a meticulous sampling of soils at different depths, vineyards have been subdivided in thirty-six parcels and fifty sub-parcels according to soils/climate characteristics.
During three years of soils and vineyards study, huge ampelographic materials have been discovered. Around 120 individuals of original Sangiovese Grosso, planted in an experimental field, have been studied in their vegetation and then micro-vinified.
During the years, four clones have been selected by Tenute Silvio Nardi which have been certified by Minister of Agriculture and reported on national register of varieties on June 7th 2019.
Today Sangiovese grosso at Tenute Silvio Nardi is cultivated in vineyards which have reached the optimal maturation (fifteen years of average age). Pruning system is spurred cordon with six-eight buds per plant. Densities vary from 5.000 to 6.000 plants per hectare, low yields (50-60 q/ha) to privilege best quality.
Thanks to the careful clonal selection, today Tenute Silvio Nardi Brunello has specific characteristics which are uniquely linked to this winery.
